In your mind, focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses. People approach me, and the first thing they tell me is 'I'm not good at...' What I want to know is what you are good at. When you become stronger at what you do well, the weaker points will improve too." Dave Scott, 6x Ironman Champion
Soft-spoken and calm off the bike, his gentle persona defies what he excels at and loves most on the bike: a heated, chaotic race. When the bunch is tightly wound as the race approaches its crescendo, when everyone is on the rivet and hell is breaking loose, that is when Stijn Devolder is at his best.
One of the veteran riders with Trek-Segafredo, Stijn has ridden for US Postal, Discovery, Quickstep, and Vacansoleil-DCM before joining RadioShack- Leopard-Trek in 2013. It was sport director Dirk Demol, knowing Stijn from his amateur days as well as on US Postal and Quickstep, who brought the Belgian to the team when others thought he was past his prime. Stijn responded by winning the National Championships and proved a valuable support to Cancellara in his rush to win the Classics.
Stijn won his first pro race in 2004, the fourth stage of the Four Days of Dunkirk. In 2005, he made his mark by taking the overall in Three Days of De Panne, then put a stamp on his career by winning the Tour of Flanders two years in a row, in 2008 and 2009. He continued his winning ways in 2010 with the overall in the Tour of Belgium and then doubled up wins in both road and time trial at the National Championships.
He is a rider who can still execute in the Classics although crashes have stolen the best of him in the last two years. When March and April roll around there is none better to have at your side; Stijn will again be ready to play a big support role in Fabian’s final year.
