MSA leads VAHS MTB Series after 3 races. Gus Myers demonstrating excellent form and leadership in the Varsity category--he's currently in the Leader's Jersey. Lucas Mariutti is only a few points behind Gus in overall Series. Cassy McPhee has finished consistently on the podium in the highly competitive Varsity girls races. JV riders continue to have strong finishes in the 100+ JV field. 

gervais signs professional contract

Miller School of Albemarle Endurance Team captain and senior, Laurent Gervais, makes the jump to the professional ranks of cycling by signing with Aevolo Cycling Team, a new UCI/International Professional under-23 team.  The team is directed by Michael Creed, a former professional cyclist at the World Tour level.

Coach Hufnagel and Coach Dvorak were invited to the White House to engage with senior White House and Obama Administration officials. Orchestrated by the White House Council on Environmental Quality, MSA's coaches helped plan a path forward to grow programs and initiatives to ensure that youth have opportunities to experience our outdoor heritage.

charlottesville area trail runners 1/2 marathon


On Saturday, October 29, Miller School of Albemarle will host the second-annual CATHalf Trail Half Marathon. Taking place on MSA's scenic 1,600 acre campus, the event showcases 13.1 miles of student-built and maintained trails. All finishers receive a custom Patagonia t-shirt and the event also benefits the MSA Endurance Team and the further development of campus trails.




MSA had an impressive showing at the 2016 GMSR. Laurent Gervais competed in the Pro/1 category and had a stellar 4th place result in Stage 2. New MSA rider, Evan Clouse, showed good end-of-the-season fitness with top-ten finishes in all 4 stages, including a near-win with a solo breakaway in the criterium. 



Remember the time we raced in Richmond's downtown Forest Hill Park during the VAHS MTB Series? That was awesome!

Rise of A star at roanoke twilight

Junior, Laurent Gervais, storms through the Roanoke Twilight Pro Criterium on Saturday night. Competing against some of the top criterium professionals in the USA (including current USA National Champ Brad Huff), Gervais positioned himself in the front of the race all 90 minutes. By the end of the race over half the field had been pulled and only 17 remained in the front group. Five riders slid off the front, and Gervais finished 4th in the field sprint to secure his first Pro Criterium top-ten. 



MSA cycling coach, Andrea Dvorak, shares her most memorable moments from Redlands Bicycle Classic. For thirty years, Redlands Bicycle Classic has been the proving ground for American cyclists and has launched many riders to success in the pro tour. During her career, Andrea won a half dozen Queen of the Mountains jerseys and helped numerous teammates win the overall. Check out full article below. 


F.U.B. Trail unbound

Over the past three months, MSA student-athletes have worked with Coach Guptill in the design and construction of an all-new free ride zone on campus. Located at the top of the school's upper meadow, the new zone features challenging terrain and drops geared towards downhill and free ride skills. This past weekend, Gentry Jefferson filmed and produced a short video highlighting the adventure of being an MSA student-athlete and the thrill of riding the new trails.

MSA Advisory Board Member and Pro Tour rider, Ben King, discusses his comeback from a broken leg this winter. Ben was able to regain his fitness with a disciplined indoor trainer riding, including a 7-hour trainer session averaging over 250 watts. He spent some of these trainer hours at MSA riding with team riders. Check out video that chronicles his comeback.

Good attendance is something that is of the utmost importance at boarding school. At MSA, this includes never missing a day on the bike. Miller School of Albemarle partners with Kinetic Trainers to ensure riders never miss a day of training. Additionally, Kinetic's new SMART technology allows riders to measure their power output with iPhones and iPads. This provides athletes the ability to complete workouts precisely and maximize training time. Check out photo journal of team in action during recent snow storm.

Adam Cohen and Gentry Jefferson partnered up this fall and winter to highlight their "house" at MSA and trails they have built over the past two years. Check out some incredible riding, trails, and film editing. 

Great example of cross-curricular connections happening. Trails were built using Engineering skills; cycling skills were practiced on MTB team; film was cut using lessons learned in Fine Arts Department. Project-based learning and collaboration at its finest. 



MSA partners with Specialized Bicycles. 

At MSA, students love bikes--riding them, maintaining them, and racing them. Working with Specialized allows MSA student-athletes and coaches to do what they love on the best bikes in the world. Varsity team athletes ride Specialized Stumpjumper World Cup MTB and Tarmac Expert road bicycles. See full photo journal. 


MSA Instrumental in Growth of NICA Virginia

When MSA decided to launch a cycling program in 2010, creating interscholastic racing opportunities in Virginia was one of the school's top priorities. In addition to building, its own elite cycling team, MSA wanted to assist building the infrastructure for student-athletes around the Commonwealth to ride and race bikes as a school sport. In 2014, MSA helped facilitate the creation of the Virginia Interscholastic Cycling League, which now has over 100 coaches, 20 teams, and 250 student-athletes. 


gentry jefferson wins overall 2015 title

After winning three of four races, Gentry Jefferson took the overall NICA Virginia Interscholastic Cycling League Sophomore Boys title. The only person to beat Genty in 2015 season was his teammate Gus Myers. The two had previously gone head to head in the spring VASH MTB Series, which Gus winning the overall. Each now has a leader's jersey to hang on his wall. 


William dorn wins at home

After numerous podium finishes in the 2015 NICA season, Will Dorn wins in commanding fashion on his home course. This is Will's second win at MSA (previously he won the first race of the VAHS MTB Series in 2015). Using smart tactics and home course advantage, Will attacked in the final lap to take a 30-second lead over former MSA student Taylor Clarke. 


Brazilian duo making moves

Thomas and Lucas Mariutti have flown out of the gates at MSA. Thomas attended MSA his Freshman year and went on that summer to win Brazilian National Time Trial Championships. His younger brother, Lucas, grew up riding and racing BMX and has now shifted his focus entirely to road and mountain biking. Learn more about their success. 


richmond 2015 world championships

The MSA cycling team was established in 2010. Just five years later, the program has developed three athletes who were selected to compete at the pinnacle of the sport, UCI Road Cycling World Championships. Akin to making the Olympic team, top riders from each nation compete for the coveted rainbow jersey in the time trial and road race. MSA's Pedro Martins, Marcio Oliviera (Brazil) and Ashlyn Woods (United States of America) were selected to compete. See photo journal of the experience.
